Syracuse University’s Center on Disability and Inclusion is excited to invite you and your students to a free virtual training to help them prepare for this winter’s Student Empowerment Day 2027 in Albany.

Getting Ready to Advocate in Albany!

Student Empowerment Day is an opportunity for students in New York State to share their voices with state legislators to advocate for a continued state budget for Enhancing Supports for Disability Services across New York State

Date: Tuesday, November 10
Time: 2:00 P.M
Format: Zoom
Register here: https://syracuseuniversity.zoom.us/meeting/register/u3LU9AeASeaeq9XMYe_MCw

Co-sponsored by IHETAC and Led by DATN’s Denise Rozell, the training will help students:

  • Understand what advocacy is and why their voices matter
  • Learn the basics of state and federal government and how the New York State Legislature works
  • Build relationships with legislators and their staff
  • Tell their personal story in a short, powerful way and make a clear request
  • Know what to expect during the Albany trip

Students are the experts on their own experiences, and policymakers’ decisions affect their education, work, and lives. This training will give them the tools and confidence to speak up for themselves and others.

We will send the presentation slides in advance of the meeting so you can preview the content and share them with your students ahead of time. Please encourage your students to register and log in on November 10th. Program staff are welcome and encouraged to join as well.
